Collective monograph on the issue of "untranslatability" in translation from/into Czech. The authors of the publication assume that language is inherently linked to the culture, history and way of thinking of the people who have used and are using it, and that the degree of knowledge of a language depends on the degree of knowledge of the history and thinking of the users of that language. "Thus, no self-contained dictionary can remove the 'blind spots' in translations, since no dictionary that can condense the complete human experience is feasible or conceivable. The authors of this publication ask the following questions in their texts: how to shade in the target language the differences in the source language that the target language does not "know"; how to translate the historical experience that has been reflected in the linguistic expression if it is completely different from the experience of the users of the target language; how to deal with established formulations or allusions that relate to long-forgotten films, statements by politicians or various curious historical events that the source language has preserved; how to translate, for example, speeches that are linked to specific local customs, ways of life or landscapes; how to make 'visible' in the target language places that the language cannot 'see'.
