Elucidating the genetic control of southern anthracnose resistance in red clover

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is an important forage legume of temperate regions, particularly valued for its high yield potential and its high forage quality. A worldwide collection of 397 red clover accessions was genotyped using a population-based genotyping-by-sequencing approach. Resistance to southern anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum trifolii, was assessed in the greenhouse using spray inoculation. Mean plant survival rate for single-spore isolate inoculation was 23% across all accessions. Only very few accessions showed considerable resistance (survival rates > 50%), most of the accessions were highly susceptible. This highlights the urgent need to improve resistance to southern anthracnose in red clover. Genome-wide association analysis revealed several loci, which were significantly associated with the trait and may represent promising candidate genes for anthracnose resistance.
